Bio

Mitchell Edward is a narrative and surrealist artist who is disciplined figurative illustration and steel sculpture. He has attended Sheridan And Flemming College earning a Visual and Creative Arts Advanced Diploma and an Artist Blacksmith Certificate.

Artists like Frank Frazetta and Todd

McFarlane inspired Edward from a very young age; the nightmare themed toys he used to play with, surface in much of his personal and creative work; such as the genereal action and terror atmospheres, as well as the focus on human figure and handheld sized sculptures. Edward’s work is a double-edged sword, achieving beauty and grace, as well as circulating around atrocity and horror; He affiliates with balance and contrast; antipodes fuel edward's engine for creativity. Yin to the Yang. Petal to the Thorn.

Artist Statement

My work isn't so much a form of art and expression as much as it is a result of my urge to create and explain. Design, image, sculpture, theme and story; all of these and more, bring me the most satisfaction in life when done originally and creatively. Imagination to me is the most productive act of will one can undertake. The passion for me is not expression, but projection; not a message, but an idea. The act of doing is as much a reword as the act of completion.

Routine and discipline are key in my work. They ensure I can create the patterns I see and conjure, over and over. However at the same time, play and experimentation add a darwinistic approach to the development of my skills. I never do anything exactly the same twice, but I always pay attention to what works now and again, just a little bit better just by chance. I believe the potential of the individual is truly infinite, therefore I believe I can work towards any level of success in my work, given the time, focus and knowledge required.

The beautiful part of steel is the contrast and hypocracy of it; the shiny, chrome surface poised stark against the sharp edges and the heavy mass within poses a beautiful rose effect to me. The petal by the thorn. Wielded as a medium. I recieve a paternal pride from developing strong work. I constantly strive to improve evrything i do in one way or another. Creation and Invention are my instinct, the rest is practise.
